The Impact of the C8 on My Car Communities

I’d like to talk just a few moments about its impact in the car communities I am part of (present company excluded, as you know what you’ve done, Oppo)

Kinja'd!!!

1. The NSX FB groups are up in a tizzy arguing about its validity compared to a NA1 or NA2 for equivalent pricing. They are split pretty much half and half about why anyone would buy a NA1 now, or if the NSX badge (classic collectible syndrome) will keep high prices afloat.

2. The Supra/Toyota/Lexus groups are essentially in denial, with some arguing that the Supra started showing up in dealers today to almost minimal fanfare while everything post is still mid-engine-LT2. They’re not as heavily divided, but differing opinions are heavily varied. The price point is really making a lot of them think.

3. The C7 corvette groups I’m part of have completely gone apeshit. Everyone is either arguing about the anticipated falling of C7 prices or how they just wanted a manual or how mid engine isn’t a Corvette or bringing up the dreaded Camaro butt.

These are the only car groups I’m really part of. Like it or hate it, the C8 has managed to take even completely non-related car groups and literally have them focused on this one topic. Even if the car winds up being a dud on the road or track or explodes every 2 hours when it comes out, you can not deny the huge impact the car has had on the automotive scene.

I just have to pretend I haven’t seen it until the Z06 version comes out. I love it in that Rapid Blue.

I debated heavily before buying the C7 - I took a real long look at 911s and Lotuses and R35s. I even took a quick look at 05 Ford GTs (still well out of my price range) and now I am not looking at anything else. Such is life in C8 world

The original NSX is a near 30 year old design, so I’d be surprised if the C8 really affects that market. I doubt a car from 2019 could alter a cult status like that.

In the case of the new NSX though… oh boy .

1. The NSX was a half-cocked Half Life 3 that took too long to deliver. I can’t say whether or not values will stay as they are or go up because I don’t really care.

2. LOL! Minimal fanfair for a downbadged Z4 coupe sold at a Toyota dealership is expected. Because everyone is gonna buy a Z4. Wait, they’re both Z4s.....The majority will buy the actual Z4.

3. Boomer boomer boomer boomer boomer boomer boomer. Also, late model cars are DEPRECIATING ASSETS. And I thought they taught better finance classes decades ago....I will admit that I can’t afford or will ever buy a C8 new and the lack of manual is saddening. But cheap ass C7s, my body will be ready in hopefully the next 5 years.

Jealousy is an ugly color.

Basically you have an industry where they kept charging more and more for admittedly more performance and somebody called their bluff. I remember reading an industry insider saying how profitable the performance models are, keep the supply limited so the enthusiasts have to pay the price and you’ve got some solid icing on your cake.

Chevrolet called their two pair bluff  with a flush and now everybody else is going to have to match that hand to stay in the game.

I love the idea of a mid-engined Corvette at this price point. I know it’s an awesome car (or there’s every indication that it will be awesome once people get to drive it.)

I’m just not a fan of how it looks.

$60k (realistically $75k or CAD90k) is too much money to spend on a car that you don’t like visually . Regardless of how awesome it is.

That I can understand. If the NC1 looked to be in an awkward position before, it’s essentially checkmate now.

However , I’d still say the appeal for an NA1 revolves more around style and driver involvement. No one is buying them for sheer performance, especially since they’re classic cars now. A modern day four- cylinder Mustang is more powerful. Original NSXs are a product of 90s Japan: over-engineering, historical merit , and aftermarket   support.

I think so too, but I’m not certain what the market for them will look like in a year. Although you can get some pretty solid perf numbers with Forced Induction

07/22/2019 at 15:27

Agreed. The  NA1 still isn’t a slow car, or an any less viable platform (lap times confirm this ). It’s just an old car with a different sort of following.

Kinja'd!!! someoneatacura > VajazzleMcDildertits - read carefully, respond politely
07/22/2019 at 15:30

Kinja'd!!!1

I’m not speaking for the folks on NSX prime, which I can confirm has some crazy ass members, but we don’t fully know the performance numbers for this car yet, or how it will drive. People choosing which hill to die on already is pretty damned stupid.

Also, this is a great car for ALL car enthusiasts for one simple reason - competition. In the photography world, when one manufacture comes out with a really great product, all the other manufactures start pushing hard to match or exceed it, while not increasing the prices of models in that bracket of camera . All users win, as each manufacture tries to improve the same overall device while keeping the costs the same. This car will do the same thing - it will force manufactures to offer comparable products for comparable prices , or lose out.

I think it’s safe to say that the most volatile members of those groups are the loudest right now and since there are no real numbers or real world examples it would be premature to say one way or another.

“3. The C7 corvette groups I’m part of have completely gone apeshit. Everyone is either arguing about the anticipated falling of C7 prices or how they just wanted a manual or how mid engine isn’t a Corvette or bringing up the dreaded Camaro butt.”

On the main page of Jalopnik, Corvette fan boys tore into me for saying we should wait to see the numbers before crowning this car with a hypothetical ZRI package the fastest car ever.

I simply pointed out that Ferrari, Lamborghini, and McLaren have been doing this whole mid-engined thing a long time so Chevy might have a learning curve before it’s the fastest car around Nürburgring.

Reading comments from the Corvette community, almost moved me from being super excited about this car (and considering a purchase) to really looking down on them.

But the car is so cool. It doesn’t deserve to be tied to the opinions of old-school fans, it just deserves better owners.

“2. LOL! Minimal fanfair for a downbadged Z4 coupe sold at a Toyota dealership is expected. Because everyone is gonna buy a Z4. Wait, they’re both Z4s.....The majority will buy the actual Z4.”

Personally, I’m a big BMW fan, but if I were buying one of these I would by the coupe instead of the convertible.

For the same reasons I would buy a Cayman over a Boxster (although the Spyder has my full attention).

But, for me neither are an option because of the transmission choice.

Last, the NSX is a cool, seemingly amazing car. But, Acura is a brand that basically relies on GM- style badge engineering (leather seats in Hondas)

Acura  does not generate the fan base to bring in buyers or drive up values. Prices won’t depreciate, but they won’t go up either.

At this point my stance is.

1 it really should have a manual option.

2. I hope the next gen Camaro, or a lower tier FR corvette does show up, and it a good drift car. C5,6, and 7 are basically becoming the New S Chassis at this point, with the Z33/35 being it’s only real competitor,  and I think GM should keep that going.

Even in the videos Chevrolet released, they admit the car did not feel good right away and needed a lot of improving. The whole thing i s brand new, it would be naive to think every piece will be perfect on the first attempt.

I agree, but I think it may be fixable.

The lines on the side, the general profile of the car, I like.

If the front end and especially the rear fascia were cleaned up to really look special and cohesive, I think the car could go from interesting to down right sexy .

I am half tempted to see what a fully painted, or contrast painted pieces in the grille. Considering how the center is solid, and the sides are ducted to side radiators, a modernized take on the C3 look could perhaps work.

A hot version of the C8 will destroy the value proposition of the NSX, which was questionable to begin with.
